PLAGIARISM PREVENTION
When conducting research, especially online, it is tempting to copy and paste others' words, but remember, this would be plagiarizing. Plagiarism can result in a zero on a paper, a failure in a class, or even expulsion from school (think getting suspended from or kicked out of college, yikes!).
Plagiarism occurs when you use someone else's words, ideas, images, etc. without citing your source. In addition, copying someone else's work word for word even when you do cite is considered plagiarism.

- turning in someone else's work as your own
- copying words or ideas from someone else without giving credit
- failing to put a quotation in quotation marks
- giving incorrect information about the source of a quotation
- changing words but copying the sentence structure of a source without giving credit
- copying so many words or ideas from a source that it makes up the majority of your work, whether you give credit or not (see our section on "fair use" rules)

So, how do you ensure you don't plagiarize?

- when in doubt, cite, cite, cite your sources!
- learn and practice paraphrasing
- plan your paper, so you don't wait until the last minute
- take effective notes so you know where your information came from and you won't be tempted to guess which sources you should cite
