Honda Center and the 2028 Olympic Dress Rehearsal: American Volleyball Bets on 18,000 Seats

In July 2028, Honda Center in Anaheim will stop being the home of the Anaheim Ducks. The ice will be stripped out panel by panel, the sub-floor cooling system covered, and roughly 18,000 seats will look down on a court built to Olympic volleyball specifications. One year before that moment, the Los Angeles 2028 organizing committee will run a dress rehearsal, and Honda Center has been chosen as the test environment for the indoor volleyball tournament. The announcement runs fewer than two hundred words, but it carries three separate decisions: an infrastructure choice, a commitment on tournament format, and an implicit statement about where volleyball sits inside the commercial Olympic ecosystem. Honda Center opened in 2026, seats about 17,174 for basketball and can exceed 18,000 in concert configuration. Recent Olympic volleyball venues have been smaller. Tokyo 2026 used Ariake Arena at roughly 12,000 seats. Paris 2026 used South Paris Arena 1 at Porte de Versailles, also around 12,000. Rio 2026 used Maracanãzinho at under 12,000. Beijing 2026 used Capital Indoor Stadium at about 17,000, the closest precedent to what Anaheim is targeting. Los Angeles 2028 is built on a no-new-build philosophy. Honda Center already exists, already has operating staff, service contracts, parking and access roads. Placing volleyball in Orange County also spreads spectators away from downtown Los Angeles, which will host dozens of sports simultaneously. The money behind the announcement sits in three layers. The International Olympic Committee owns the brand and allocates programme slots. The local organizing committee owns infrastructure, ticketing and services. The international volleyball federation and its commercial partner own the sport's long-term growth story. That commercial partner is a joint venture backed by private equity capital, and private equity needs a growth narrative. The most sellable narrative is the United States, where college women's volleyball draws enormous crowds but remains commercially underdeveloped. The cost ledger starts at floor level. Converting an ice arena for volleyball means isolating the refrigeration system, installing a shock-absorbing sport floor, and raising lighting to broadcast standards capable of tracking balls travelling above 100 km/h. Retrofit and installation typically run into millions of dollars, and most of that sits in the organizing committee's operating budget rather than the volleyball federation's. Volleyball benefits from an investment it does not pay for. A volleyball tournament at the Games features 12 men's and 12 women's teams. Under pool play plus knockout format, each gender produces roughly 38 matches, about 76 in total, bundled into 40 to 45 sessions. With roughly 18,000 seats, an assumed 0.85 occupancy and average tickets between 80 and 110 US dollars, indoor volleyball ticket revenue lands in the range of 50 to 70 million US dollars. That is my estimate, not an official figure. Time zones matter. Los Angeles is 14 hours behind Vietnam. A 19:00 local final airs at 09:00 in Hanoi and 11:00 in Tokyo. That serves both the US primetime market and Asian audiences, a rare double advantage for an Olympic host. For volleyball, which has deep audiences in Japan, China, Thailand, the Philippines and Vietnam, the morning slot remains watchable. A 3 a.m. slot would not be. Olympic qualification runs on 12 berths per gender. At Paris 2026 the structure was host plus six berths from three Olympic qualifying tournaments plus five from the world ranking. Vietnam's women sit outside the world top 30, and the men outside the top 40. The gap to an Olympic berth is not a single outstanding player; it is the number of high-quality international matches a full squad plays each year. The blind spot in a dress rehearsal is that it tests hardware only. Organizers can rehearse sound, lighting, crowd flow, security and broadcast. They cannot rehearse American demand for professional men's volleyball. A 2026 Nebraska match drew more than 92,000 spectators, a record for a women's volleyball match, but that is college volleyball with campus identity behind it. The US men won bronze at Paris 2026 and the women silver, yet national team success does not automatically fill 18,000 seats for pool matches without stars. Logistics add friction. The LA28 athletes' village sits on a university campus in western Los Angeles, more than 60 kilometres from Anaheim depending on route. A venue rehearsal will not answer whether players recover adequately between matches. And the largest blind spot sits outside the United States. Once the flame goes out, Honda Center returns to hockey. No volleyball legacy remains beyond a set of court drawings and an operations dataset. For Vietnamese volleyball, the distance to an Olympic berth does not shrink by a single centimetre once Anaheim finishes its rehearsal. Infrastructure can be rented. Technical systems can be bought. Audience demand must be built over years. Vietnamese volleyball has the audience and the momentum. What it lacks is a league dense enough to turn that audience into year-round revenue, and a professional operations layer standing between the court and the stands.
